In this series of novels, healthy, fit and active younger ladies (but over 21) compete to enter and then advance through a series of summer camps. They are all paid well to go to these 6 weeks to 3 month camps. The successful ones will earn gold or silver team status, and go on to compete in regional competitions - very strict precision marching, dance and athletic/gymnastic like events.  Think Survivor or An Officer and a Gentleman where only those on the final winning squads earn the coveted Sensuous Iron Lady designation and award rings.

All camps are super strict total immersion programs for new cadets held in well-to-do farm or mansion surroundings, miles from civilization and cut off from the normal city world. They may return later to be officers, but for now there is no out. Either perform and make the chosen few on the competitive squads, or be demoted to Slave or even Pony status where they serve the officers and the rest of the cadets.

Their rank will greatly affect their day to day life, clothing, activities and living conditions. Rather than yell and berate and hand out exercise as punishments for non-performance, the officers at SIL camps simply keep score and continually grade the cadets against each other. Lose in enough challenges and find yourself tied up and spanked or whipped. Too many times and you will find yourself demoted one grade.

From Cadet you go down to Slave. Not only do you lose the color and rank of your squad, you also get to live in Slave sack clothing and heavier leather collars and hand cuffs. You don't sleep in the dormitory anymore, you sleep naked in the basement chained to a plain wooden bed with the other slaves. This is after checking your sack dress at the door and being caned each night.

During the day Slaves are needed to help with all the running of the camp, especially cooking and cleaning and caring for the good cadets, as well as for the ponies, horses and piglets. So there is an immediate need for slaves when each camp starts, making the initiation period really tough as the officers try to instill obedience and precision, while quickly getting their quota of slaves off the cadet rolls.

A good Slave can be promoted back up to Cadet, but only after one full week as a Slave. On the other hand, a bad Slave will be demoted to Pony! Think now of some East of Eden, Claiming of Sleeping Beauty and Story of O flash backs. Ponies live in the stables only. Ponies spend all day in leather harnesses that cover but the barest of parts and restrict many movements. They get to pull lightweight carts or little chariots. They run and walk all day until they collapse exhausted at night in their stalls - but they are allowed to sleep without harnesses - except collars which don't come off for most ranks at all. They have light weight bridles and bits, so cannot talk ever, except when shut up together at night. Like the Slaves, their only job in life is to serve the other cadets and officers. Plus they get to eat a more pony-like diet and are washed down by slaves with hosepipes. Yes, after a week they can be promoted back to Slaves, but few make it.

Ponies who are bad will be demoted to Cart Horses. (Even very bad Slaves can be directly sent to Cart Horse rank). Cart Horses are in harness and character with tails all the time. They usually work in pairs or fours by day to pull the bigger work carts. They seldom get up enough speed to run. Bad Cart Horses might even become piglets but we will see about that later.
